We always think of tax and finances at the end of the financial year and rightly so, this is the time of year to focus on this. However, it is a good time of year to compliment the tidy up of finances for your business with a few other key components of your business too. Here is a checklist to get you on the right track for a smooth transition into the new financial year.
More than 30% of business owners don’t take holidays. Many say it is never a good time to leave the business and take a holiday. The Easter long weekend is probably the closest you will get to it being a good time (unless you are in the hospitality industry). A lot of businesses will close, or at least slow down over these four days. You don’t have to go away, but use the time to slow down, go for walks, get a massage, sleep in and catch up on the enjoyable, relaxing things you normally don’t have time for.
After all, you are your business’s most valuable asset and generally work long hours, so looking after yourself makes good business sense. So take the time now to get your body and mind back into peak condition. Spending time with friends and family is also a healthy way to rebalance.
Ok, now time for me to take on some of my own advice.
I recently found myself needing some advice on an aspect of my business but I didn't really know who to ask. Knowing that this wasn’t the last time, I would encounter a situation like this, I wondered what I could do about it. This led to the idea of creating a small group of like-minded business owners who could meet together and run ideas past each other. It turns out that this concept isn't rocket science, and that Mastermind Groups like this have been around for quite a while. I just wish I had of thought of it earlier.
To get the ball rolling, I emailed a few business owners that I know who have similar business goals to me and would possibly benefit from this type of interaction. I also wanted the group to include individuals I had built a trusting business relationship with over time but weren't necessarily clients, so that we could discuss things like handling a confidential issue and be assured that this information would remain confidential.
It was great to receive some positive responses to my emails so I set up our first meeting, which was a huge success. Each of us brought to the meeting one thing related to our business that we wanted advice on. We soon discovered that each member of the group had different strengths and different skills and experience to offer.
A collection of your customers’ details doesn’t have to be fancy, a simple excel spreadsheet is all you need to start. However, it is essential you do collect email addresses and phone numbers of your customers to market to.
Sending out a regular E-Postcard including a monthly offer or maybe a bi-monthly e-newsletter is a cost effective way to keep in front of mind of your customers.
It is important to keep growing this list too. There are many ways you can do this for free. Here are some of them:
As the End of Financial Year draws closer, we all know that means preparing our financials for the accountant for tax purposes. There are other areas you might want to think about to help ease the stress of the end of financial year and get the new one off to a great start.
I asked Karen from Pure Heart Fitness for some tips I could include in this e-newsletter and for my website for all of us who sit down at a desk most of the day. The facts show that we must be proactive about eating well and moving enough during the day in order to avoid weight gain, stress and flagging fitness.
The year seems to flash before our eyes and before we know it Christmas is here. We work through the year with our heads down and barely have time for a friendly chat to our clients, let alone extending a thank you. So, this is the ideal time of year to reflect on the year just past and to remember those who have supported your business over the year.
